Dear Readers,

Change is inevitable. In this ever changing world that we live in, one who changes after the change will survive. One who changes with the change will succeed. But the one who brings about the change will lead……!

To be successful leaders and to secure a bright future for our profession, we must join together and create change. Change for the better. Changes are required in our perception of imparting quality dental education. Only then will we succeed in giving the best dental care to our patients. And it is this which will earn respect and dignity for dental professionals from the populace.

Let us agree that, today, dental education is languishing, almost in the doldrums, so to speak, because of shortfalls in imparting teaching and training. Our profession is under serious threat of losing dignity, integrity and identity because of weak foundation in education, no upgradation of technology in many educational institutions, lack of clinical facilities and teaching materials, lack of funding for education and future practice especially for the students from economically lower social class. And there is a lack of proper guidance for the setting up of a competent clinical practice.

We should apply the concepts of total quality management to improve our future generations by including workshops on practice management, training in human resources development, training in infection control, handling legal issues, conducting small research projects, publishing scientific work, applying for funds to conduct research and many other career based programs in the undergraduate curriculum so that the students are oriented properly to plan better for a good future for themselves. We should incorporate problem - based learning and evidence-based practice in our undergraduate curriculum to improve their competence.

Statutory bodies, professional associations, universities and administrators of dental schools should work together with a true mission of achieving global standards by incorporating systems for continual improvement. They should provide enough guidance, resources, support, and infrastructure to sustain quality control and improvement programs.

Dear friends, if we, as a team are ready to guide these forces of change with passion and commitment, fresh graduates will have a fantastic future. I request my professional colleagues, "Please join hands in our mission of taking our profession to greater heights."
